Reality check: The Moorpark boys’ basketball team, previously thought to be the Frontier League title favorite, was upset Tuesday at home by Santa Paula, 76-59.

Santa Paula (9-6, 1-1 in league) shot 53.3% from the field, led by backup center Mike Kolbeck, who scored 18 points to help sink Moorpark (13-6, 1-1).

“I thought we could take advantage of their defense,” Santa Paula Coach Tom Donahue said. “I told our guys to attack the press. We did a good job of dribbling through it and got some layups off of that.”

Crunch time: Channel Islands’ double-overtime victory over Thousand Oaks in a boys’ game last Friday was a must-win situation for the Raiders, who despite a 10-3 record were 0-3 in the Marmonte League.

The Raiders appeared to have the game won in regulation, but Thousand Oaks’ Josh Armour made a 30-foot shot as time expired to tie the score, 59-59.

Channel Islands scored four points in the final 16 seconds of the first overtime to force the second overtime.

“This was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of,” Channel Islands Coach Gary Abraham said.

Good crop: Coach Guy Greene is enjoying one of his best wrestling teams in 19 seasons at Simi Valley. The Pioneers are led by senior Justin Holt at 145 pounds and junior heavyweight Chad Troxler. Holt is 20-1, Troxler 19-1.

Desirable job: Robert dos Remedios, who resigned as Burroughs’ football coach, said he’s interested in the Saugus post vacated by Jack Bowman.

“I’m buying a house out there,” he said. “That’s probably the only other job I’d be interested in.”
