Bennem’s 34 Points Carry Magnolia

Zamiro Bennem scored 34 points and Magnolia made its free throws down the stretch in a 69-68 victory over Western in an Orange League boys’ basketball game Friday at Magnolia High.

Magnolia (11-7, 1-1 in league) made 11 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter. Bennem made eight of 15 shots from the field and 16 of 21 free throws.

Ryan Harrington scored 26 points for Western (4-13, 0-2).

In other Orange League games:

Brea Olinda 71, Savanna 60--Sean Wink scored 24 points and Jason Skrifvars had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Brea Olinda (15-3, 2-0), ranked fifth in the county.

Valencia 59, Anaheim 46--Robert Smith had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Valencia (12-6, 2-0).

In the Century league:

El Modena 81, Foothill 49--Tommy Ngo had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead El Modena (9-9, 1-2).

Rashad Sager scored 17 for Foothill (0-3 in league).

Orange 54, Canyon 40--Steve Lein scored 17 points for visiting Orange (14-3, 3-0), ranked 10th in the county.

Villa Park 58, Santa Ana Valley 54--Isaiah Cavaco scored 15 points for Villa Park (14-3, 3-0), ranked sixth in the county. Sal Santoyo scored 18 points for Santa Ana Valley (9-9, 2-1).

In the Empire League:

Century 53, El Dorado 40--Chris Lopez had 14 points and seven rebounds for host Century (12-7, 3-0).

Cypress 51, Kennedy 39--Wes Bunn scored 14 points for Cypress (11-7, 2-1).

Katella 66, Loara 48--Joe Barraza scored 23 points and Kenny Moreno scored 24 for Katella (15-3, 3-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 68, Sunny Hills 49--Buena Park Coach Ed Matillo posted his 100th victory. Ruben Gasso scored 20 points and Brian McDonald had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Buena Park (10-9, 1-2).

Jason Maughan scored 20 points for Sunny Hills (7-11, 1-2).

Sonora 48, Troy 28--Ben Jones had 11 points and nine rebounds for second-ranked Sonora (16-1, 3-0).

David Sun scored 10 points for Troy (13-4, 2-1). Troy’s leading scorer, Jerry Inzunza, scored only five points but was sidelined in the second half because of an ankle injury.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 61, Garden Grove 35--Scott Ogilvie scored 18 points La Quinta.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 56, Westminster 45--Kevin Hanson scored 22 points and Tony Dow added 17 for Ocean View (13-4, 3-1).

Brandon Fox scored 18 for Westminster (9-10, 2-2).

Servite 52, Santa Ana 36--Chris Killens had 13 points and seven assists and Steve Shea had 13 points and 13 rebounds for visiting Servite (14-5, 3-1).

Tustin 43, Saddleback 32--Rick Hobbs scored 19 points as Tustin (15-5, 3-1).

Brethren Christian 57, Ontario Christian 50--Jacob Brown scored 17 points for Brethren Christian (9-9, 2-1).

Calvary Chapel 63, Whittier Christian 42--Joe Ortiz scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half for ninth-ranked Calvary Chapel (15-4, 3-0).

Aliso Niguel 77, Laguna Beach 61--Jeff Munsell had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Nathan Hair had 23 points for Aliso Niguel (12-6, 2-0).

Blair Anderson had 20 points and Kurt Beimfohr had 19 for Laguna Beach (7-9, 0-2).

Estancia 51, Costa Mesa 47--Sam Nelson scored 15 points and Ryan Simpson scored 12 for Estancia (13-5, 2-0). Todd Hylton scored nine points for Costa Mesa (3-10, 0-2).

University 66, Laguna Hills 49--Eric Palmer scored 22 and Larry Johnson added 20 for University (10-6).

In the Sea View league:

Newport Harbor 46, Corona del Mar 32--Matt Jameson had 17 points and Danny Pulido had 15 points in a victory for Newport Harbor (2-1 in league). Cory Gority scored 11 points for Corona del Mar (4-15, 0-3).

Santa Margarita 62, El Toro 47--Brad Gloger had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Santa Margarita (12-5, 3-0). Mark Wulfemeyer scored 18 for El Toro (13-4, 1-2).

Woodbridge 53, Irvine 32--Chris Burgess scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for Woodbridge (13-3, 3-0). Burgess also had 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

In a nonleague game:

Pasadena Poly 52, St. Margaret’s 38--Alex Huff scored 18 points for St. Margaret’s (5-11).
