The European Commission plans to open an antitrust inquiry into Boeing Co.’s $15.4-billion acquisition of McDonnell Douglas Corp. amid concern the alliance will hurt competition. . . . Owens-Corning Fiberglass Co. must pay $31 million to a Mississippi man dying of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, a Florida state court jury decided. Ohio-based Owens-Corning was expected to appeal the award, the highest in an asbestos-related lawsuit in Florida. . . . President Clinton plans to nominate Ellen S.
