1991 Rubissow-Sargent “Les Trompettes,” Napa Valley ($14.99)

Cabernet Franc, the grape that makes Chinon and Bourgeuil in France’s Loire Valley, gets star billing in this delicious blend from a small two-family winery that specializes in red wines from grapes grown on Mt. Veeder in the Napa Valley. “Les Trompettes” has the earthiness and astringency of good Cabernet Franc fleshed out with about a third Merlot to make an appealing rustic wine with the palate-cleansing qualities of, say, a good Barbera. Great with hearty foods like sausages, cassoulet and braised meats, it can also accompany a pungent fresh or aged goat cheese.
