Jobless Claims Increase to 355,000

More Americans than expected applied for state unemployment benefits last week, as the total number of workers receiving benefits fell. The Labor Department said initial jobless claims rose 34,000 to a seasonally adjusted 355,000 in the week ended Jan. 18. Analysts expected claims to rise by 20,000.
