Plans for Apartment Complexes Advance

A developer took the first step toward construction of two apartment complexes in Camarillo’s east end, as city officials voted to conduct studies that could eventually clear the way for the projects.

The City Council voted 3 to 1 Wednesday night, with Councilman Bill Liebman dissenting, to conduct environmental and school impact studies on two parcels now zoned as commercial properties.

Pardee Construction Co. has owned a three-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Oak Canyon and Santa Rosa roads and a four-acre parcel at the northeast corner of Woodcreek and Santa Rosa roads for more than 20 years with little interest from commercial users, company official John Osgood said.

“We thought apartments would provide diversity of housing in east Camarillo,” Osgood said.

The company plans 76 two-bedroom apartments on the first site and 80 two-bedroom units on the second.

After the environmental and school impact studies are conducted, the issue will be discussed at Planning Commission and City Council meetings.

There will be time for public comment before the council decides whether to change the zone and allow for construction of the two apartment complexes to begin.
