Warrior Rally Not Enough as Irvine Wins in Wrestling
Woodbridge closed to within 12 points with two matches remaining but Irvine responded with a pair of pins to post a 51-27 victory in a Sea View League wrestling Thursday at Woodbridge.
Nick Sanchez (215 pounds) and Ryan Dickie (275) won by pins in 3 minutes 25 seconds and 25 seconds for the Vaqueros (2-1 in league) to seal the victory. Tim Testerman, wrestling in his first match after missing 1 1/2 months because of a back injury, won by pin in 2:58 at 160 pounds for Irvine.
Woodbridge is 0-3 in league.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 44, Katella 27--Brandon Fischer’s pin at 145 pounds gave El Dorado (9-3, 3-0) the lead for good.
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 56, La Quinta 6--Daniel De La Torre won by pin in 1:48 at 140 pounds for host Garden Grove (8-6, 4-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 78, Estancia 0--Victor Ha pinned Moises Padilla in 4:28 at 112 pounds for 10th-ranked Laguna Hills (11-2, 2-0).
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 78, Savanna 6--Anaheim (31-0, 3-0), ranked fifth in the county, won seven matches by forfeit and five by pin, including Mario Lilly’s in the 140-pound class.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Aliso Niguel 66, Costa Mesa 12--Sophomore Ben Fields at 130 recorded his first varsity pin in 3:07 for Aliso Niguel (2-1).
In Empire League water polo:
El Dorado 7, Katella 3--Jessamyn Grewal scored two second-half goals for host El Dorado (9-8, 3-0). Devon Wright scored two goals for Katella (7-7, 2-1).
Cypress 12, Loara 7--Lindsay Sampson scored four goals to lead Cypress (2-2 in league). Carmela Rubin and Jenny Camales each had three goals for Cypress.
In the Century League:
Villa Park 16, El Modena 4--Morgan Meyer and Kristyn Pulver each scored eight goals for visiting Villa Park (13-2, 3-0), ranked third in the county.
Foothill 8, Canyon 6--Jennie Adams scored two of her six goals in the fourth quarter as ninth-ranked Foothill (9-5, 2-1) outscored No. 8 Canyon, 4-1. The Comanches are 10-6, 1-2.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 14, Magnolia 6--Briana Folds had three goals and six assists and Amanda Ogle scored two of her four goals in a four-goal first quarter for host Valencia (10-1, 3-0).
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 14, Trabuco Hills 7--Jessica Povey scored eight goals and Alexa Olsen added six for visiting Capistrano Valley (8-8, 2-0).
Mission Viejo 17, San Clemente 5--Chelsea Rowlands scored nine goals and Nicole Stanitsas had five to lead Mission Viejo (12-5, 2-0). Suzanne Peterson had four goals for San Clemente (0-2 in league).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 7, Fountain Valley 3--Andrea Griffith and Suzanne Kuyper each scored two goals for Esperanza (8-5, 4-1). Goalie Michelle Nuttall had 10 saves for the Aztecs, including a stop on a four-meter penalty shot.
In the Sunset League:
Marina 9, Edison 5--Jenny Lamb had five goals and five steals to lead Marina (8-3, 4-1). Kami Fleming scored three goals for Edison (8-7, 2-3). Candice Chick had seven saves for Marina, including a four-meter penalty shot by Fleming. Marina is ranked fourth in the county.
