A Dangerous Mixture

Dangerous chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine--a powdered drug that gives a long-lasting energetic high--can be absorbed into the skin, inhaled or accidentally ingested by unprotected people. According to Oregon’s state health department, these chemicals include:

* Chloroform, a carcinogen and a reproductive hazard.

* Benzene, a carcinogen and a reproductive hazard.

* Lead acetate, a suspected carcinogen and reproductive hazard.

* Thorium dioxide, a carcinogen and a reproductive hazard.

* Phosphorous, which can produce kidney, liver and bone damage in some cases of repeated exposure.

* Hydrochloric acid, which can cause severe tissue damage.

* Mercuric chloride, dust from which is extremely toxic if inhaled.

* Acetone, which irritates tissue, particularly mucous membranes.
