Newport Center Expansion Advocated

As part of the city’s economic development plan, Councilman Dennis D. O’Neil is looking for ways to make Newport Center bigger and more profitable.

The City Council will vote Monday on O’Neil’s proposal to establish a committee to study whether more offices, shops and homes could be built around the center, which turns 30 in September.

“I think work, shop and live is a great combination,” O’Neil said. “And if it does well, it is good for the city and it is good for the community.”

The center has three hotels and hundreds of businesses near Fashion Island, one of the largest shopping centers in Orange County. Construction on the center’s first residential development, called the Colony apartments, began last year.

Mayor Janice A. Debay and Councilman John E. Noyes Jr. would serve on the committee, along with O’Neil, if the proposal wins council approval.

The council meets at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 3300 W. Newport Blvd.
