Best Advice in Town: The Times Home Buyers Fair
With Southland home sales the strongest in six years and prices at or near bottom, more and more house hunters are jumping off the fence and into the market.

Brochures in seven languages on mortgages, credit and the home-buying process will be distributed at The Times Home Buyers Fair on Saturday by the Fannie Mae Foundation, not the Federal National Mortgage Assn. (Fannie Mae).
Well, help is on the way.
The Los Angeles Times will present its eighth annual Home Buyers Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center, 700 W. 32nd St., Los Angeles.
The highlight of the fair--the largest consumer-education event of its kind in the nation--will be two question-and-answer seminars with experts on home buying, mortgages and credit.
Besides the workshops, some 55 exhibitors and nonprofit and government agencies including the Internal Revenue Service, FHA, VA, state Department of Real Estate, Consumer Credit Counseling and the Home Loan Counseling Service--will be on hand to talk with you at their booths.
In the fair’s morning workshop, Times “Real Estate Q&A;” columnist Robert J. Bruss; columnist Dian Hymer, author of the new book “Starting Out,” and syndicated columnist Ilyce R. Glink, whose new book is “10 Steps to Homeownership,” will answer fair-goers’ questions on all aspects of house hunting and home buying.
In the afternoon workshop, titled “Selecting the Best Home Loan,” a panel of mortgage experts will field questions on credit, qualifying, understanding lending terminology and picking the right loan.
Special presentations on low-down home loans and house hunting on the Internet also are planned for this year’s fair.
At its “Paths to Homeownership” pavilion, the Federal National Mortgage Assn. (Fannie Mae) will have experts on hand all day to explain its low down-payment mortgages.
And at noon, a seminar titled “Saving Time & Money When House Hunting on the Web” will be presented by Inman News Features, the manager of the home fair and one of the leading providers of real estate content on the Internet.
Admission to the fair is $7.50. A $2.50-off coupon will appear in upcoming editions of the Real Estate Section of The Times.
