INDIO--Now in its 11th year, the Southwest Arts Festival, Feb. 1 and 2 at Riverside County Fairgrounds, will feature 150 artists from throughout the United States, live music and food vendors. SANTA ANA--Kicking off Black History Month is the Feb. 1 Black History Parade & Cultural Faire. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at 17th Street and Broadway. The fair will follow at Santa Ana Stadium, with live music, children’s activities and vendors selling jewelry, ethnic fare and other items. Fair admission $2 for adults; children 12 and under free. SAN FRANCISCO--Museum-quality art and artifacts will be shown at the Tribal, Folk and Textile Arts Show Feb. 8 and 9 at Ft. Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion, Marina and Buchanan streets. Items for show or sale will include African sculpture and masks; Latin American pottery; and Native American blankets. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 8 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 9. $8 per person for one- or two-day pass. NEVADA CITY--The Joe Cain Procession on Feb. 9 is based on a custom that began in Mobile, Ala. Cain is credited with reviving the Mardi Gras tradition in Mobile in 1866. One tale is that he had multiple wives who met each other at his funeral. A group called the Merry Widows will re-create the services at a mock grave site before the parade, which will feature marching bands and costumed “revelers” tossing trinkets to the crowd. 1 p.m. at Broad and Cottage streets. HOLTVILLE--The Salton Sea International Bird Festival will be held for the first time Feb. 14-17 at Barbara Worth Golf Resort and Convention Center, 250 Country Club Drive. A free trade show will have exhibits and products for sale. 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 15 and 16 and 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 17. In a free activity area, children can touch nests and other items, and watch chicks hatch. Daily field trips to birding spots are $10 per person.
