At least nine cars were hit Monday by a stolen vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of busy Interstate 805, authorities said.

Three people, including the alleged driver of the stolen Chevrolet Suburban, sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers first saw the white Suburban about 3 p.m. traveling about 90 mph. After a brief chase, the driver got off the freeway but made a U-turn and headed north in the southbound lanes.

The driver appeared to be aiming for other cars, witnesses said.

The Suburban eventually ran into the freeway’s center divider, and the driver darted across the freeway, where he was arrested. The vehicle rolled back into the path of traffic, colliding with several more cars.

Authorities were trying to determine the driver’s identity late Monday. The vehicle was reported stolen in downtown San Diego.

The incident closed Interstate 805 for about two hours.
