Garcia Gets Mater Dei Past Mission Viejo
Tina Garcia made two free throws with five seconds left to play, giving fourth-ranked Mater Dei a 49-47 victory over unranked Mission Viejo in South Coast League girls’ basketball game Tuesday at Mission Viejo High.
Garcia, who scored six of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, also tied the score, 47-47, with 47 seconds remaining.
Mission Viejo (10-7, 3-3) went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to battle back from a 45-38 deficit, taking the lead, 47-45, with 1:20 remaining. Tami Higham scored a game-high 23 points and had 12 rebounds for Mission Viejo.
Mater Dei improved to 14-5, 5-1.
In the Academy League:
Capistrano Valley Christian 62, Fairmont 28--Hayley Hall scored 29 points and had 13 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (13-5, 5-0). Anchal Saigal scored 10 points for Fairmont (2-3).
Connelly 45, St. Margaret’s 32--Melanie Maton scored 11 points for Connelly (10-5, 5-0). Amber Arnold had 11 for St. Margaret’s (4-9, 1-4).
Liberty Christian 39, Orangewood Academy 18--Felicia Jao scored 16 points for Liberty Christian (8-7, 3-2). Teammate Stephanie Wu had 13 points.
In the Century League:
Canyon 37, Santa Ana Valley 22--Paulette Seaman scored nine points for Canyon (12-7, 3-3), which outscored Santa Ana Valley (9-14, 2-4), 23-15, in the first half. Maria Fariaz scored eight points for Santa Ana Valley.
El Modena 49, Orange 47--El Modena took the lead for good on Amanda Lopez’s layup off a pass from Christina Hernandez with two minutes remaining. Hernandez scored 16 points to lead the Vanguards (10-7, 3-3).
Foothill 50, Villa Park 34--Rebekah Cole scored 16 points to lead first-place Foothill (14-5, 6-0), which led by 12 after the first quarter. Jennifer O’Keefe had a game-high 21 points for Villa Park (8-11, 4-2).
In the Empire League:
Century 56, Cypress 50--Century (15-6, 5-0) battled back from a four-point deficit to outscore Cypress (14-7, 3-2), 22-12, in the fourth quarter. Aprile Powell scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Century. Jennifer Laster scored 23 points and made seven of Cypress’ 12 three-pointers.
El Dorado 68, Kennedy 30--Jamie Nebeker scored 22 points and Stephanie Patten had 14 for El Dorado (11-8, 4-1).
Katella 42, Loara 31--Catherine Painter scored nine points in a victory for Katella (11-8, 2-3). Betsy Holman of Loara (10-11, 1-4) was the game’s high-scorer with 15 points.
In the Express League:
Heritage Christian 33, Palos Verdes Rolling Hills Prep 20--Christa Larsen scored nine points for Heritage Christian (6-11, 2-3).
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 49, Sunny Hills 45--Cara Dykes scored 17 points to lead Fullerton (5-16, 2-3).
La Habra 39, Buena Park 23--Nori McCrystal scored 12 points to lead La Habra (12-10, 3-2), which outscored Buena Park, 23-9, in the second half.
In the Orange League:
Brea Olinda 97, Anaheim 9--Erin Kelly scored 21 points in a victory for Brea Olinda (17-2, 5-0). Kelly had 15 points in the second quarter.
Lindsey Davidson scored 14 points for the second-ranked Ladycats (17-2, 5-0).
Savanna 46, Western 38--Kai Starr scored 15 points for Savanna (6-13, 3-2). Adrienne Ratajczak had 15 points for Western (12-9, 2-3).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Estancia 54, University 35--Vivi Rodriguez scored 17 points and Jill Black added 13 and 11 rebounds for Estancia (12-9, 3-2). Monique Mathews scored 16 points for University (8-12, 0-5).
Laguna Hills 60, Aliso Niguel 36--Tamara Inoue scored 20 points as top-ranked Laguna Hills remained undefeated in the Pacific Coast League. The Hawks (18-3, 5-0) outscored Aliso Niguel, 26-11, in the first half.
Brooke Hyman scored 16 points for the Wolverines (13-6, 2-3).
In the Sunset League:
Edison 77, Marina 72--Edison’s Jenny Shutt went eight for eight from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Chargers upset fifth-ranked Marina. Edison (14-5, 3-2) led by one after the second and third quarters, before extending its lead to as many as nine in the fourth.
Shauna Steward led the Chargers with 28 points and Shutt had 19. Natalie Nakase had 18 points and eight assists for the Vikings (15-4, 3-2).
Esperanza 61, Fountain Valley 46--Leah Combs scored 16 points as eighth-ranked Esperanza defeated Fountain Valley (7-14, 1-4). Beth Weidler scored 13 points for Esperanza (15-5, 4-1).
Kelly Boeke scored 13 points for the Barons.
