Donations Sought for Shelter Homeless

Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter is launching SAFTY ‘97, a campaign to help provide temporary housing for homeless families and individuals.

An acronym for Support A Family Throughout the Year, SAFTY collects pledges that keep homeless people off the street.

A $15 donation provides a homeless person shelter for one evening. A $60 gift supports a family of four for a day.

Families typically stay at the shelter for 60 days to help them get back on their feet and develop independent living skills. Individual stays vary.

Donations to the shelter have been down a bit in the last six months, said Judy Cooper, an Interfaith Shelter board member.

Though many people give to charities during the holidays, “these people are needy at other times of the year,” she said.

Participants in the SAFTY program are given donation books with receipts to simplify tracking their gifts for tax purposes. One-time gifts to the program also are accepted.
