Ventura resident Robert Nunn, a former three-time state horseshoe champion, died Monday at Community Memorial Hospital. He was 91.

He was born in Rocky Ford, Colo., and grew up in Port Hueneme.

Nunn was proud of the fact that he was the state’s premier horseshoe player three times between the ages of 17 and 19, said his second wife, Mary Nunn, whom he married in 1983.

“You only have one [champion],” she said.

A county resident for 86 years, Nunn was an assistant cashier at Bank of Hueneme for 14 years and a former assistant manager for the California Lima Bean Growers Assn.

In retirement, Nunn enjoyed bowling, snooker, golf and traveled to Europe, South America and Asia.

His first wife of 53 years, Lenora Steele Nunn, preceded him in death.

In addition to Mary Nunn, survivors include sons Dick Nunn of Moab, Utah; Bill Nunn of Austin, Nev., and Bob Nunn of Graeagle, Calif.; daughters Barbara Ward of Houston, Mary Seals of Palm Springs and Liz Ekblad of Grass Valley, Calif.; brother Charles Nunn of Oxnard; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Santa Paula Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Guardian Memorial Funeral Directors, Oxnard.
