High Winds Cut Power to 60,000
Wind gusts in excess of 80 mph swept through parts of western and central New York, leaving at least 60,000 people without power. Areas from Niagara Falls to Watertown were affected by the strong pressure system north of Lake Ontario, the National Weather Service said. Buffalo International Airport was running on emergency power, and at least one window was blown out at the Xerox building in Rochester, forcing a street to be closed. A spokesman for Niagara Mohawk, said that up to 60,000 of the utility’s customers were without power for at least part of the evening.
