Cal State Fullerton Beats San Diego in Baseball

Brandon Duckworth picked up his third victory of the season as Cal State Fullerton defeated San Diego, 12-2, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Titan Field.

Duckworth (3-0) pitched seven complete innings, striking out seven and walking one. He gave up one earned run.

The Titans (10-8) scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings and got three more in the fifth and sixth.

Mike Lamb had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored for Fullerton. Pete Fukuhara had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

In other nonconference baseball:

UC San Diego 3, Chapman 0--Michael Bedar scattered six hits over eight innings in a victory for UC San Diego (4-6).

Josh LaRocca recorded 11 strikeouts for Chapman (5-3).

In the Santa Barbara softball Invitational:

Long Beach State 5, Akron 2--Amanda Adams had two hits and two RBIs as Long Beach State defeated Akron in pool play. Nicole Walsh also had two hits for the 49ers (15-5).

Long Beach State 4, Iowa State 1--Amy Miner pitched a four-hitter in a victory for Long Beach State. Amber Griego had a two-run triple.

In the Big West Conference swimming and diving championships:

Earley wins the three-meter title--Arika Earley, a former Mission Viejo High star, won the women’s diving title to become the first woman at UC Irvine to win a conference title. The sophomore won with 450.30 points.

In men’s swimming, former Irvine High standout Jason Lezak won the 100 yard butterfly in 49.19 seconds for UC Santa Barbara, which leads the men’s competition with 398 points.

At the end of the second day of the three-day meet, UC Irvine is second behind UC Santa Barbara with 282, followed by Pacific (270).

Nevada leads the women with 516 points, followed by New Mexico (311). UC Irvine is in last place with 234.

Competition concludes today at Belmont Plaza Pool with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--Brooke Lacey won in singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, for Cal State Fullerton. Denise Wilson and Amy Medlin won doubles, 8-2, and Debbie Venusa and Jennifer Canfield also won in doubles, 8-3, for the Titans.

UC Irvine 6, San Jose State 3--Alexis Brown (5-4) won in singles, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, and paired up with Leah Fisher to win in doubles, 8-4, for UC Irvine (4-1). Freshman Liz Yim (6-3), who leads The Anteaters with the best singles record, won in singles, 6-3, 6-2.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, Pacific 1--Long Beach State, ranked 10th in the nation, upset ninth-ranked Pacific, 15-11, 6-15, 15-2, 15-8.

Geoff Cryst led the 49ers with 34 kills. Gaby Amar had 15 kills and Chris Seifert had 62 assist for Long Beach State (10-4, 5-4).

Greg Wakeham had 24 kills to lead Pacific (8-4, 3-4).
