San Diego Comes Back, Gains a Tie With Titans
The University of San Diego scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie Cal State Fullerton, 4-4, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at San Diego.
The game was called after 10 innings because of darkness.
The Titans (20-14-1) scored a run in the first, sixth and seventh innings for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Tony Betancourt homered and Jay Parks scored on a sacrifice fly as San Diego (14-11-2) cut the lead to one.
Fullerton added a run in the ninth inning, when Scott Seal scored on Gaby Halcovich’s sacrifice fly.
Then San Diego’s Jeff Powers and Jeb Dougherty each hit two-out RBI singles to tie the score 4-4.
Pete Fukuhara had three hits and two runs for Fullerton.
In another nonconference baseball game:
Chapman 18, Occidental 4--The heart of Chapman’s lineup--Dustin Martin, Cale Shepherd, Robert O’Brien and Luis Garcia--had 11 hits and 14 RBIs between them as the Panthers (15-9) won their sixth straight.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Southern California College 8, Point Loma Nazarene 7--Greg Schrieber hit a three-run homer in the first and the Vanguards (23-8, 11-4) eventually took an 8-1 lead, before Point Loma (12-20-1, 4-10) rallied with six in the top of the ninth.
At the UC Irvine Invitational golf tournament:
UTEP wins--Rob Manor of Texas El Paso shot a final-round par 72 to finish at one-under to win medalist honors and lead the Miners to a 12-stroke victory over second-place North Texas in the 54-hole tournament at Coto de Caza.
Irvine’s Conan Vitale shot 75 Tuesday to finish tied for 10th at eight-over and lead the Anteaters to a ninth-place finish in the 20-team tournament.
