New Schedule Mulled for Brea Canyon High
Students at Brea Canyon High School next year could have one-week vacations between six-week blocks of school.
Trustees, who expressed concerns over the proposal at a February study session, will discuss Monday whether to allow the continuation school to try out the alternative calendar for the 1997-98 school year.
Brea Canyon would be the only campus in the Brea-Olinda Unified School District to change its calendar.
Principal Bob Phelps said the one-week breaks would reduce the likelihood of student burnout and provide blocks of time for teachers to present themed lessons.
But trustees said they were concerned Brea Canyon’s vacations would be different from those at other Brea schools, making vacations difficult to schedule for families with children in different schools.
Trustees also asked the school’s principal to research the benefits of such a calendar.
Monday’s meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at Brea Civic-Cultural Center, 1 Civic Center Circle. Information: (714) 990-7800.
