5 Guards Stabbed by Inmate, Officials Say : 5 Guards Reported Stabbed by Inmate at Federal Prison
LOMPOC, Calif. — A prisoner stabbed five correctional officers Thursday evening at a maximum-security federal penitentiary, prison officials said.
The wounds were serious and were life-threatening for at least one of the officers, said Jack Atherton, executive assistant to the prison warden.
Atherton would not say if any inmates were injured in the incident.
The incident began at about 6 p.m. when an inmate assaulted a prison officer with a weapon, Atherton said. He refused to describe the weapon.
The same inmate then assaulted four other officers who came to assist, Atherton said.
A nursing supervisor at Lompoc Hospital said workers there were treating at least five officers from the prison.
No further details were immediately available.
