Evans Sets 200-Meter Mark for Sunny Hills

Joanna Evans set the Sunny Hills High record in the 200 meters as the Lancers beat Sonora, 97-30, Thursday in a Freeway League girls’ track and field meet.

Evans’ winning time was 25.8. She broke the mark of Erin Sauchelli, who ran 25.9 last year. Sauchelli isn’t competing this season because of a knee injury sustained while playing for the Lancers’ soccer team last season.

In another Freeway League meet:

Troy 108, Fullerton 19--Lisa Dunn won the mile with a time of 5:48.6 for Troy (2-0). Dunn also won the two mile with a time of 13:05.9.

In the Century League:

El Modena 86, Canyon 50--Angela Allen finished first in the long jump (15-4 1/2) and anchored the winning 400 relay (51.8) for third-ranked El Modena (6-0, 2-0).

In the Empire League:

Katella 101, Loara 25--Kimberly Lopes finished first in the 100 hurdles (16.72) and 300 hurdles (55.1) for Katella.

In the Orange League:

Western 70, Savanna 42--Ebony Dozier of Western (3-2, 1-0) won the 100- and 220-yard dashes to help lead the Pioneers.

In Century League boys’ track:

El Modena 108, Canyon 23--Scott Dicus, Dan Crawford and Will Miller each won two events for fourth-ranked El Modena (6-0, 2-0).

In the Empire League:

Katella 115, Loara 15--Francis Johnson placed first in the 100 (11.09), 200 (23.6) and long jump (21-3 1/2), and James Bittner won the 110 hurdles (14.98) and 300 hurdles (41.1) for Katella.

Kennedy 66, Cypress 62--Dulani Jackson of Cypress won both sprint events but it wasn’t enough to keep Kennedy (1-2, 1-0) from edging the Centurions (0-2, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 81, Sonora 46--Jay Calimlim won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.4 and the 300-meter hurdles in 42.5 to lead Sunny Hills (2-0, 2-0) over Sonora at Sunny Hills.

Troy 98, Fullerton 29--Kyion Grayes won the 100 yards (10.3) and the 220 (23.6) for Troy (2-0).

Aaron Easton won the long jump (18-7) and triple jump (38-6) for Fullerton (0-2).

In the Mary Star of the Sea baseball tournament in San Pedro:

Brethren Christian 17, Long Beach St. Anthony’s 7--Jonathan Rouwenhorst recorded 16 strikeouts as Brethren Christian won the championship game. Rouwenhorst (5-0) also had two doubles.

Sean Ireland had four hits and four RBIs for Brethren Christian (9-4). Ireland was 12 for 15 in the tournament.

In Century League boys’ tennis:

Canyon 15, El Modena 3--Rob Saggu and David Douglas became the first doubles team in Canyon’s history to go through a set without losing a point. Saggu and Douglas won its sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for the Comanches (5-6, 3-0).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 13, Troy 5--Chris Chung swept in singles for Sunny Hills (5-2, 3-0), 7-5, 6-3, 6-0.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 16 1/2, Kennedy 4 1/2--Zeno Lee and Noel Gosom won their singles matches then teamed for a 6-3, 6-4 victory in doubles for Cypress (7-2, 2-0).

In nonleague softball:

Villa Park 3, Loara 0--Heather Culver pitched a no-hitter and had nine strikeouts in a victory for Villa Park (5-4).

Calvary Chapel 2, Kailua (Hawaii) 0--Christy Ring had four of the Eagles’ seven hits, including a triple, and scored a run in the victory in Hawaii. Keri Przygocki pitched a one-hitter for Calvary Chapel (9-2), the county’s eighth-ranked team. Kailua has been the state champion the last three seasons.

Buena Park 4, Western 1--Alicia Davison (9-5) struck out 13 batters and tripled in a run in the seventh inning for Buena Park (10-5). Dana Galeener and Rachel Bashore also had consecutive RBI singles in the second inning that gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead.

Orangewood Academy 20, Heritage Christian 6 (5, mercy rule)--Pitcher Nicole Seabern of Heritage Christian walked 14 batters and hit 10 in a 20-6 loss to the Orangewood Academy (1-3). Paloma Aguirre went two for four with four RBIs for Orangewood.

In Orange League golf:

Brea Olinda 177, Magnolia 266--David Barbera shot a two-under-par 33 for Brea Olinda at Dad Miller. Steve Bendt shot a 34 for the Wildcats (7-1, 2-0) and teammate Emerson shot 35.

In Century League boys’ volleyball:

Villa Park 3, Orange 2--Villa Park came back from a two-game deficit to defeat Orange, 8-15, 6-15, 17-15, 16-14, 15-10. Justin Dennison had 10 kills for the Spartans (8-0, 2-0).

In nonleague volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Servite 1--Steve Almaguer had 18 kills as Mater Dei won, 15-10, 15-13, 11-15, 15-9.
