College to Begin Accelerated Program
Valley College on Friday will launch its Accelerated Weekend College, an intensive program aimed at busy adults who don’t have time to attend classes several times a week.
Participants can earn three transferable units--by taking a computer science class or a health education course--in three weekends, said Sandy Mayo, director of College Outreach.
“We are looking for people who want to take a college class, but don’t have the time to sit through a traditional 18-week course,” Mayo said. “Our purpose is to meet the needs of students without interfering with their ability to make a living.”
College officials decided to offer the health and computer science classes because there is a high demand for these courses among current students as well as those already in the work force, she said.
The health course will focus on personal health issues, she said. Classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
The computer science class will focus on software programs and system networks, she said. Sessions are scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 2 to 10 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
Both courses begin Friday, she said, with meetings every weekend through May 4.
Students can register for either class at the college’s admissions office between 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday, Mayo said. Each course is $39, plus a $6 registration fee. The college is at 5800 Fulton Ave. For information, call (818) 781-1200 or (818) 778-0455.
