Road Projects Approved for Western, Beach
Businesses and residents on Western Avenue should brace themselves for a major road project starting this summer.
City Council members Monday approved a $1-million project to improve the heavily traveled roadway between Orangethorpe Avenue and Artesia Boulevard.
Public Works Director Donald K. Jensen said the project will not add lanes to the roadway. Instead, workers will repave the road and replace curbs, gutters, wheelchair ramps and traffic signs.
Work will begin in July and take several months. Access to properties will be kept as open as possible, and those affected will be notified before construction begins, a staff report said.
In August, a massive project to widen and improve Beach Boulevard will begin, and traffic will be diverted from that thoroughfare at various times, Jensen said.
The Western Avenue project will be funded largely with the city’s share of gasoline tax funds and about $400,000 from the Orange County Transportation Authority.
Other public works projects approved Monday include the installation of surveillance devices on Orangethorpe and La Palma Avenue to help control traffic flow and a widening of the Knott Avenue Bridge over Coyote Creek Channel.
