Bicyclists Will Meet to Discuss Legislation
People who get around Los Angeles on two wheels are invited to the 1997 San Fernando Valley Bicycle Summit on Thursday at Cal State Northridge.
The summit advances the reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, expected to go before the U.S. Congress in the fall. Money for highways and rail transportation comes out of the federal funding.
Local and national bicycle associations are hoping to mobilize as a unified voice to secure funding for bicycle lanes and improved trail access for mountain biking, said Aaron Hanson, executive director of the 12th Council District’s Transportation Management Assn.
“Everyone needs to view bicycles as a legitimate form of recreation and transportation,” he said, adding that awareness of bicyclists is often “very foreign” to Southern Californians who view their cars as their first priorities.
The public is invited to the bicycle summit, which is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the University Student Union on campus, 18111 Nordhoff St.
Bicycling organization representatives and local elected officials are expected to attend.
Registration costs $45 general or $15 for students and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Parking is $1.75.
