The city will buy a parcel at 782 Shalimar Drive for a 7,500 -square-foot park that could have a half-court basketball area, a playground for small children and picnic benches.
A shuttered apartment building on the site will be demolished after the property clears escrow, said Ernesto Munoz, the assistant city engineer. the City Council agreed to the purchase Monday.
The cost of the project is estimated at $357,000. The city is buying the land for $191,000 from State Street Bank & Trust Co., which took over the building through foreclosure.
