Pierce Falls to Bakersfield in 9th, 13-12

The Pierce College baseball team squandered a six-run lead against host Bakersfield in the final two innings of a Western State Conference game on Tuesday and lost, 13-12, on a two-out, bases-loaded, three-run double which culminated in a home-plate collision and left Brahmas’ catcher Kirk Mayer laying motionless for several minutes.

The teams combined on 11 errors, 14 walks and seven hit batsmen.

Leading, 10-4, after seven innings, Pierce (15-26, 7-17 in conference play) allowed six runs on three walks, three hit batters, two errors and a single.

Kyle Ursery scored the game-winning run from first base on Brian Walker’s hit off Brandon Cohen (4-2) in the ninth.

Pierce coach Bob Lofrano said that Mayer appeared fine after the collision and did not require hospitalization.

The Renegades (27-15, 16-8)--now tied for first with Canyons with two games remaining--trailed through the first seven innings. A three-run triple by Jimmy Landress in the seventh and a two-run home run by Mayer in the eighth seemed to have put Pierce in a good position.

After Bakersfield tied the score, 10-10, on the Brahmas’ eighth-inning miscues, Greg Venger broke the tie in the ninth for Pierce with a two-run double.

Valley 7, Mission 6--Dylan Forman scored the tying run for the host Monarchs (8-31-3, 7-17) in the ninth inning of a Western State Conference game when Mike Wertz grounded into a bases-loaded double play. Kris Rossfeld scored the game-winner moments later on Mission shortstop Eli Albertson’s errant throw.

Cuesta 20, Ventura 9--Jeremy Pierce broke Darren Reed’s 13-year-old school record with his 12th home run of the season for the Pirates (21-17, 10-14) in a Western State Conference North Division game at Cuesta.

Oxnard 5, Moorpark 4--Jason McAuliffe tripled with one out in the 10th for the host Condors (19-19, 12-12) and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in a Western State Conference game.

Pat Colborn had two hits for Oxnard.
