FIRST QUARTER: LAKERS: 25, JAZZ: 27

* IN REVIEW: The first quarter, as Marv Albert said on television, was “explosive.” Utah’s Jeff Hornacek, after missing his first shot, made four in a row and finished the quarter with nine points. For the Lakers, Eddie Jones and Nick Van Exel switched men, Jones defending against John Stockton and Van Exel taking Hornacek. Jones had 10 points in the quarter and Van Exel seven. Shaquille O’Neal was one for five in the quarter. After Jones made a dunk to tie the score at 15 with 5:10 left in the quarter, the Jazz had a 7-0 run. But the Lakers came back, and a three-point basket by Jones got them within 24-22. There were 22 fouls called in the quarter, 14 on the Jazz. A technical foul was called on Karl Malone, who believed he was fouled by Van Exel as he went in for an uncontested dunk. Coach Jerry Sloan was also called for a technical for arguing the call.

SECOND QUARTER: LAKERS: 40, JAZZ: 52

* IN REVIEW: Chris Morris got Utah going quickly. He came off the bench and went three for three, including two three-point baskets. After Elden Campbell missed a layup, Stockton made a three-point shot to give the Jazz a 44-35 lead. An offensive foul on Jones cost the Lakers a possession, and then Malone, after another miss by Campbell, made a jump shot for a 49-35 Jazz lead with 3:40 left in the quarter. The Lakers lost another possession when Jones, who was held scoreless in the quarter, stepped out of bounds. The Lakers went 4 1/2 minutes without scoring, were outscored 11-0 and fell behind, 50-35, before O’Neal made a layup. The only weak spot for Utah in the first half was foul shooting (six of 14). The Jazz had 13 offensive rebounds in the half, the Lakers three.

THIRD QUARTER: LAKERS: 60, JAZZ: 70

* IN REVIEW: The Lakers had a 13-3 run early in the quarter to get within 59-53, but then Byron Russell supplied the spark for the Jazz. He made successive shots, including a three-pointer, to make the score 64-54. Van Exel answered with a three-point basket, but then Campbell had his sixth miss in a row in the quarter and the Jazz was soon up, 68-57. Van Exel had a chance to get the Lakers within eight points in the closing seconds of the quarter, but a Jazz fan with a saxophone made a horn-like sound with one second left, throwing Van Exel off.

FINAL: LAKERS: 77, JAZZ: 93

* IN REVIEW: The Lakers made only two of 14 shots in the first 11 minutes of the quarter. Still, they were within five points after a three-point shot by Kobe Bryant. That was one of their two field goals in the first 11 minutes. The other was a three-point shot by Van Exel with 3:48 left that brought the Lakers back to within 82-72. The Lakers finished four for 17 in the quarter. The Jazz sealed it when Stockton stole a ball and lobbed a pass to Malone for an easy dunk and an 86-72 lead. It was only the sixth assist of the game for Stockton.
