* IN REVIEW: The Red Wings seemed happy to adopt the Ducks’ counterpunching style. Problem is they’re better off playing wide-open hockey.

* SCORING: None.

* KEY PLAYS: Detroit’s Steve Yzerman hammered a point-blank shot 10 feet over a wide-open net at the six-minute mark. . . . Duck center Mark Janssens failed to score on a breakaway at 17:50.

SECOND PERIOD: MIGHTY DUCKS: 0, RED WINGS: 1

* IN REVIEW: Detroit increased the tempo and received a fortunate bounce off a Duck stick to score. Vernon and Hebert were sharp and had more to do with the low score than neutral zone traps or defensive-oriented game plans.

* SAVES: Hebert 18, Vernon 10.

* SCORING: Detroit 1, Ducks 0--Steve Yzerman scored his third goal of the playoffs while trying to make a centering pass from the right wing at 4:34. The puck glanced off the stick of a Duck defenseman.

* KEY PLAYS: Yzerman sent an innocent-looking pass toward the slot, but the puck wound up in the back of the net. . . . With Vernon out of position, Duck defenseman Dmitri Mironov fired a shot from the slot off Red Wing defenseman Slava Fetisov. . . . Mironov pulled down Yzerman on a breakaway late in the period, but there was no penalty called.

THIRD PERIOD: MIGHTY DUCKS: 2, RED WINGS: 2

* IN REVIEW: The Ducks rallied to tie twice in the period and the teams went to overtime for the second consecutive game. Hebert left the game after suffering a groin injury at 7:02. Mikhail Shtalenkov, who shut out the Red Wings, 1-0, on March 30, replaced him.

* SAVES: Hebert 4, Shtalenkov 5; Vernon 7.

* SCORING: Ducks 1, Detroit 1--Jari Kurri scored his 106th playoff goal, converting on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle after a pass from Sean Pronger at 4:18.

Detroit 2, Ducks 1--Doug Brown put the Red Wings into the lead again at 12:14, tapping in Brendan Shanahan’s excellent pass from the left circle.

Ducks 2, Detroit 2--Teemu Selanne, standing at the left post, tapped in a rebound for his sixth goal of the playoffs after Steve Rucchin deflected Mironov’s shot from the right point at 16:53.

* KEY PLAYS: Pronger delivered a perfect backhander to Kurri for the first Duck goal. . . . Shanahan’s pass to Brown for Detroit’s go-ahead goal was superb. . . . Selanne broke a three-game drought by scoring the game-tying goal.

FIRST OVERTIME: MIGHTY DUCKS: 2, RED WINGS: 2

* IN REVIEW: There was no holding back as both teams attacked the net. The Red Wings and Ducks each had to kill off minor penalties.

* SAVES: Shtalenkov 13; Vernon 13.

* SCORING: None.

* KEY PLAYS: Detroit defenseman Larry Murphy sailed a shot wide left at 1:20. . . . Duck winger Warren Rychel was denied from in front of the net at 3:12. . . . The Ducks took a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty at 12:28. . . . Detroit’s Kirk Maltby slashed Selanne on the back of the leg and Selanne had to be helped to the dressing room at 15:12. . . . Red Wing defenseman Bob Rouse went off for holding Kurri’s stick at 15:47.

SECOND OVERTIME: MIGHTY DUCKS: 2, RED WINGS: 2

* IN REVIEW: The Red Wings dominated play, but couldn’t score. Defenseman J.J. Daigneault had the best Duck chance, weaving through the defense to deliver a hard backhander off the left post.

* SAVES: Shtalenkov 17, Vernon 9.

* SCORING: None.

* KEY PLAYS: Daigneault clanged a shot off the left post at 8:53. . . . A moment later, Sergei Fedorov tipped a shot over the net as Shtalenkov moved out to challenge.

FINAL: MIGHTY DUCKS: 2, RED WINGS: 3

* IN REVIEW: The Red Wings didn’t back off to start the third overtime and they were rewarded with a victory and a 2-0 series lead.

* SAVES: Shtalenkov 0, Vernon 0.

* SCORING: Detroit 3, Ducks 2--Vyacheslav Kozlov turned in the right faceoff circle and beat Shtalenkov with a low shot with the Red Wings on a power play at 1:31.

* KEY PLAYS: Daigneault hooked Brown to the ice to put the Red Wings on a power play at 1:03. . . . Kozlov scored the game-winner 28 seconds later.
