Council Will Plot City Manager Search

The Oxnard City Council will meet at noon today in a special session to decide how they will select a permanent city manager.

Council members hope to decide whether to hire an outside firm to conduct a nationwide search or look for candidates in-house or do a combination of both to find the right person.

Since firing city manager Tom Frutchey in February, the council has been debating the selection process.

Mayor Manuel Lopez and Councilmen John Zaragoza and Bedford Pinkard have said they want a national search that includes potential in-house candidates as well. Councilmen Tom Holden and Dean Maulhardt have said they support looking at current employees first.

Hiring a professional search firm would cost the city about $21,000, and it would take up to 16 weeks for the consultant to complete the job, said Lino Corona, personnel manager.
