McDonnell’s Rocket Launch Delayed a Week

The next planned launch of a Delta II rocket by McDonnell Douglas Corp.’s space systems unit has been delayed about a week so that the company can check a potential problem detected during a flight on Monday.

The Sunday launch of a Delta II carrying a Norwegian satellite will be postponed until May 17 or May 18. Company engineers want more time to determine why the rocket part that carries satellites to their proper orbits ran low on fuel during Monday’s launch of five satellites for Iridium LLC.

Shares of St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas fell $1.375 to $57.625. The company’s space systems unit is based in Huntington Beach.
