Open houses and activities are planned throughout Orange County today to celebrate Fire Service Recognition Day, an annual event.

The free public events will be at all 61 of the Orange County Fire Authority stations, where special demonstrations and programs will take place and equipment and apparatus will be on display.

The open houses will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at every station.

In Garden Grove, two stations will host events. The main event will take place in Fire Station No. 1, 11301 Acacia Parkway, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Firefighting and rescue demonstrations, exhibits and displays, fire and safety information and refreshments will be featured.

The second, slightly smaller event happens simultaneously at Fire Station No. 4, on the northwest corner of Valley View Street and Belgrave Avenue.

Garden Grove’s historic 1926 fire engine will be on display and residents can learn about drowning and crime prevention, disaster preparedness and emergency medical information.

First established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, the recognition day focuses on the many skills and services firefighters provide to the community.

The event is also designed to honor the fire personnel and to educate the community about fire departments and services offered as well as fire prevention and safety measures.

The fire departments of Anaheim and Orange will host Fire Service Day at the Joint Powers Fire Training Facility, 2400 E. Orangewood Ave., south of Anaheim Stadium.
