Junior middleweight P.J. Goossen of North Hollywood, returning from an 11-month layoff, recorded a third-round knockout of Tim Payton before a crowd of about 300 on Friday night at the Hollywood Palladium.

Goossen, 18-0 with 12 knockouts, peppered Payton with sharp left hands and had him bleeding from the nose before the fight was stopped after the third round.

Goossen, 27, a former state champion who won the International Boxing Organization title in his last fight in June at the Warner Center Marriott, appeared rusty in spots. But he easily beat Payton (26-35) to the punch.

After a tentative first round, Goossen began to land his punches. Payton landed few blows.

Goossen said he was just happy to get back into the ring.

“My timing was a little bit off but that’ll be all right,” Goossen said. “He’s a tough guy. But I knew I was starting to get to him a little bit. In my opinion, I would have knocked him out.”

Goossen is tentatively scheduled to fight next month at the Palladium.

The bout was on the undercard of the latest comeback fight by former world welterweight champion Carlos Palomino.

Palomino, 47, who ended a 10-year retirement in January, knocked out Wilbert Garst 2:03 in the second round of a scheduled 10-rounder.

Palomino, 29-3-3 with 17 knockouts, pounded Garst with left hooks and body blows. Garst, doubled over after the third and final knockdown, appeared to be gasping for breath.

In other bouts, junior welterweight Hector Lopez of Palmdale was awarded a fourth-round knockout of Omar Flores of Torrance after Flores appeared to quit after a slip.

Lopez (36-5-1), North American Boxing Organization champion, attended Hoover High in Glendale and was a silver medalist in the 1984 Olympics for Mexico.

Chuck Goossen (8-2), P.J.’s brother, recorded a four-round majority decision over Roy Pegus (1-3-1) of San Diego in a welterweight bout.

Danny Perez (7-1) recorded a fourth-round knockout of Patrick Reeder (4-1-1) in a scheduled six-round junior welterweight fight.
