Cal Lutheran Softball Gains a Split in West Regional

Cal Lutheran split two games on the opening day of the NCAA Division III West Regional softball championships Friday at UC San Diego.

The Regals knocked off top-seeded Simpson College, 4-1, before falling, 5-2, to third-seeded UC San Diego, which swept Cal Lutheran in a doubleheader May 3.

Julie DiFatta’s two-run double sparked a three-run first inning for Cal Lutheran (26-11-1) against Simpson, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Assn.

UC San Diego (25-19) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Cal Lutheran on run-scoring doubles by Erin Bridges and Erin Cornell.

Cal Lutheran will play Simpson again at noon today, with the winner meeting UC San Diego at 2:30 p.m.

Long Beach 2, Moorpark 1--The top-seeded Vikings (39-5) scored the winning run in the sixth inning on two singles and a sacrifice bunt in a Southern California Regional second-round junior college softball game at Long Beach.

Moorpark (24-19) will play at noon today against the winner of a 10 a.m. game between San Bernardino and Bakersfield.

Moorpark 5, Bakersfield 2--In a first-round game, Danielle Stines had two hits and drove in a run for the Raiders. Moorpark will play at noon today against the winner of this mornings San Bernardino/Bakersfield game.

BASEBALL

Pepperdine 19, Loyola Marymount 3--Randy Wolf (9-4) allowed 16 hits but only three runs in eight innings and the Waves (32-24, 18-7) rolled to a West Coast Conference victory at Loyola Marymount (20-37, 10-15).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 5, Washington 1--The Waves (18-7) won five of six singles matches and clinched victory without having to complete any doubles matches in an NCAA West Regional match at the University of San Diego.
