AROUND THE LEAGUES

Right-hander Bobby Kazmirski, a non-drafted free agent who became one of the top closers in the Oakland Athletics’ farm system last season, remains optimistic about his career despite elbow surgery he underwent this week.

“I hope to be back pitching again by mid-July,” said Kazmirski, a former Agoura High standout. “The [A’s] really gave me a good chance to come back.”

Kazmirski, who had elbow surgery in 1993 while he was at UCLA, had experienced pain in his right elbow since the end of last season, when he saved 28 games for West Michigan.

He tried to pitch through the pain during spring training, but lasted only 4 1/3 innings with Class-A Visalia before deciding to have surgery.

“I was throwing in a game and my arm popped real bad,” Kazmirski said. “My hand went numb.”

Kazmirski, 24, who had surgery on Tuesday, will be rehabilitating at home in Agoura Hills for the next three weeks, then report to extended spring training in Phoenix.
