Newport Harbor Sailing Wins Championship
The Newport Harbor varsity sailing club took first place at the high school national double-handed sailing championships last weekend in Miami.
The Sailors, coached by Jaime Malm, scored 216 points to defeat 19 teams in winning the Mallory Trophy for the second time in four years. Runner-up Miami Palmetto High scored 225; Corona del Mar finished 18th.
Newport Harbor will attempt to defend the Baker Trophy on Memorial Day weekend, when the Sailors compete in the high school team racing championships in Detroit.

Santa Margarita High School won the Orange County high school equestrian championship for the fourth consecutive year. Marina finished second and St. Margaret’s third.
Santa Margarita’s Natasha Axelrod won the overall championship with 409 points. Dana Hills’ Missy Froley was second with 401 points.

The state high school boys’ and girls’ lacrosse championships will be Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, at Irvine Valley College.
The Irvine boys’ team, winner of the Orange County League, is the county’s lone entrant; there are no girls’ lacrosse teams in the county. Admission is free, but parking is $5.
The El Toro boys’ team plays an exhibition match 9 a.m. Saturday against University of San Diego High. Irvine’s first-round match is 10:30 Saturday against Torrey Pines. The boys’ championship game is 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
