Homeowners on an Anti-Weed Tear

Gail Pomeroi and dozens of neighbors plan to spend Saturday “tearing the suckers out” along Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

Her words are a form of street slang, but not with a violent meaning. She is referring to the weed-like “sucker bushes” that sprout up underneath the area’s many crape myrtle trees.

The sucker removal will be part of the Valley Village Homeowners Assn.’s first community beautification effort.

From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will also sweep the sidewalks and gutters of Laurel Canyon from Burbank to Magnolia boulevards and trim and water the crape myrtles.

“I drive Laurel Canyon every day and I got tired of seeing it the way it looks,” said Pomeroi, chairwoman of the association’s beautification committee.

She has enlisted help from city and nonprofit programs, including Operation Clean Sweep, Clean & Green and New Directions for Youth.

The event could also raise the profile of an often-overlooked San Fernando Valley neighborhood, Pomeroi added.

“A lot of people don’t know where it is, even though it’s not a new community,” she said.

Lunch will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring gloves.
