100 Workers at Base Get Layoff Notices

More than 100 employees at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme have received layoff notices as part of the latest round of cutbacks at the base.

In addition, 113 workers have been reassigned to other positions, Navy officials announced Wednesday.

Capt. Daniel Hambrock, base commander, said the laid-off employees will be able to work through October.

“This is an exceptionally difficult period in the life of this organization,” Hambrock said in a news release. “Many of our friends and co-workers are going to be seriously impacted.”

Since 1994, Navy officials have been trying to reduce the work force through voluntary buyouts, hiring freezes and restrictive hiring.

But due to a reduced workload and continuing defense budget cutbacks, more workers needed to be let go, Hambrock said.

Employees have known about the impending layoffs since March, when officials held discussions and meetings explaining the situation.

Currently, there are 1,035 civilian workers on base and 268 military personnel.
