Ventura County’s heat wave blazed on Thursday, with temperatures in the 90s in several cities.

Piru, Moorpark and Fillmore all reported highs of 93, said Bill Hoffer, a meteorological technician with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

“It can happen this time of year,” he said. “A high pressure system builds up over Southern California, and there’s nothing to push it away.”

Elsewhere, the mercury hit 91 in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, 89 in Ojai, 86 in Oxnard and 81 in Ventura, according to Hoffer. None of the highs were records for the day, he said.

The heat wave shows no sign of letting up today, said Vladimir Ryshko, a National Weather Service meteorologist, with temperatures expected in the mid-90s in Santa Paula, Piru and Fillmore.

Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Moorpark can expect highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s in Oxnard and in the upper 70s to low 80s in Ventura.

But relief may be on the way, Ryshko said. There is a slim chance of low clouds and fog covering the coastline beginning late tonight.

While many county residents find heat waves unbearable, certain businesses benefit from them.

Christopher Campbell, manager of Jamba Juice in Thousand Oaks, said his sales of juice drinks increase by 30% with the summery temperatures.

“It’s the nature of our business,” he said.

Power outages were reported in Ventura and Camarillo on Thursday, but Southern California Edison had not determined the cause by late in the day, Edison spokesman Steve Hansen said.

The Camarillo outage began at 1:22 p.m., and the 165 customers affected were not expected to get power restored until 10 p.m., Hansen said.

The Ventura outage lasted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and affected 80 customers, he said.
