FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass fair when winds aren’t keeping boats off lake. Lots of smaller fish coming from upper and lower lake.

LAKE PIRU--Some trout taken by trollers using Needlefish and Kastmasters deeper than 15 feet. Few limits. Occasional bass caught at north end. Inflated night crawlers getting most. Crappie fair on mini-jigs and mealworms at east end.

PYRAMID LAKE--A few stripers being caught on anchovies and plugs, but the bite is not at all reliable. Largemouth and smallmouth bass continue to be caught on a daily basis, mostly on plastics. Catfish picking up.

LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass fair on spinnerbaits and plastic worms at 15-20 feet. Red ear perch fair on night crawlers at east end. Some limits of trout, most coming between harbor and dam.

LAKE CASITAS--Lots of small bass, but few lunkers. Plastic worms and night crawlers getting most.

CORONA LAKE--Sizzling temperatures keeping the lake still during day. Mostly catfish coming alive in the afternoons. Hybrid striped bass beginning to boil in afternoons as well.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish have replaced trout as the predominant bait-taker and are biting on mackerel and shrimp.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout still fairly active, despite the heat. Scott Genkeros, Irvine, five trout topped by an 8-4, on Power Bait at West Bank. Catfish active in shallows, feeding on chunks of mackerel.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--The lake is so full of catfish it’s hard not to catch one, especially in afternoons and evenings. Bass bite fair. Small crank baits getting most.

LAKE SKINNER--Bite is on the slow side, but catfish (mackerel and chicken livers) and striped bass (anchovies, plugs) are showing at the scales daily.

LAKE PERRIS--Lots of small bass and bluegill.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bass action has slowed, but lots of fish are still being caught at El Capitan, Hodges and San Vicente. If it’s bluegill you want, San Vicente is the place--1,390 were caught in the past week.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout fishermen have given up on night crawlers because crappie strike them before the trout can make their move.

BIG BEAR LAKE--A lake-record 7-pound 4-ounce largemouth bass was caught by Danny Robinson, Apple Valley, on a spinnerbait at Grout Bay.

BISHOP--Lots of limits of pan-sized trout taken from all upper-elevation lakes. Road to North Lake has finally opened.

MAMMOTH LAKES--Hot creek dry fly action is superb, thanks to a caddis hatch that begins at about 11 a.m. Gray parachute caddis fly is a good bet. Limits of trout fairly common at Crowley Lake, but perch “are coming out by the buckets,” according to one report.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--Trollers using Rapalas and Needlefish and bait fishermen using Power Bait and Sierra Gold are getting quality fish at all lakes on the loop.

BRIDGEPORT--Vast improvement throughout region. Little Virginia Lake is yielding fish to 10 pounds, and lots of limits of the pan-size variety. The hot bite at Kirman Lake is believed to be over for the season.
