Padres Shake Up Starting Rotation

The San Diego Padres shook up their pitching staff Thursday by sending two struggling starters to the bullpen and moving two rookies into the rotation.

Will Cunnane, 23, will start today at Houston in place of Sean Bergman. Left-hander Heath Murray, 24, called up from triple-A Las Vegas on May 22, will start Monday at Atlanta in place of Tim Worrell.

Also Thursday, the Padres signed right-handers Bobby Munoz and Bob Scanlan to minor league contracts and assigned them to Las Vegas.

Houston outfielder Bob Abreu had wrist surgery and is expected to be sidelined at least a month. . . . Houston pitcher Sid Fernandez had minor surgery to repair an arthritic condition that was found on his left elbow. He is expected to begin throwing again in 10 days.
