NEWS FLASH : Pepperdine’s Gore Tied for Lead in NCAA Golf Championships

Pepperdine senior Jason Gore, a Hart High graduate, shot one-over par 72 on Thursday to gain a share of the lead after two rounds of the NCAA Division I golf championships at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.

Gore, who was the first-round leader at 65, is tied with Keith Nolan of East Tennessee State at 137 with two rounds remaining.

The 25th-ranked Waves are in third place, four strokes behind leader Northwestern. It is the first time the Waves have survived the 36-hole cut at the NCAA championships.

Pepperdine senior Mike Walton is tied for 10th at 141 and junior Andy Walker is tied for 43rd at 146 after a second-day 69.

First-year Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger is with the team but has been confined to his hotel room with chickenpox.

All-Americans: Pitchers Jim Parque and Jeff Weaver were the only area products to make Baseball America magazine’s All-America team and no one from the area was chosen to the Sporting News All-America team.

Parque, from Crescenta Valley High, is a UCLA junior left-hander who was 13-2 with a 2.97 earned-run average entering this week’s College World Series. He also made the Sporting News second team.

Weaver, from Simi Valley High, is a Fresno State sophomore right-hander who was 11-5 with a 3.63 ERA. Weaver led the nation with 181 strikeouts in 141 innings and struck out 21 in a regional game last week.

Adam Kennedy, the Cal State Northridge shortstop who was a Collegiate Baseball All-American, made the Baseball America second team as a designated hitter and the Sporting News second team as a shortstop.

Pepperdine left-hander Randy Wolf (El Camino Real High) and Nevada third baseman Andy Dominique (Alemany) were second-team Baseball America choices.

Paring down: As expected, senior Bridie Hatch of Nordhoff High will run in the girls’ 800 meters but not in the 300 low hurdles today in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

There will only be about 15 minutes between the events.

Volleyball commitment: Village Christian High outside hitter Sara Fristad committed to Cal Lutheran on an academic scholarship and will play volleyball.

Coach resigns: Joseph Bunevacz, track and field coach at Crespi High for the past two seasons, has resigned.
