Local Control

Xandra Kayden should take her head out of her textbooks and attend an L.A. City Council meeting (Opinion, May 25). Her opinion of neighborhood councils as “the wrong direction” shows she cares little about real reform of City Hall. I’m the Westchester delegate in the Alliance for Self-Determination, the group pushing for changes in the state law to allow Los Angeles to be remade into smaller, locally controlled cities. Our organization’s members come about half from the Valley, half from the Central City, Westside and the Harbor. People from all parts of Los Angeles are tired of centralized control by our uncaring City Council and mayor.

Kayden’s call for “regionalism” is the exact opposite of what this town needs. We need neighborhood councils with power over zoning and deployment of city services that are elected by neighborhoods.
