Top Draft Pick: First Baseman Davis

The Dodgers selected first baseman Glenn Davis of Vanderbilt with the 25th pick in the first round of the June free-agent amateur draft Tuesday.

Davis, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior, batted .319 with 18 home runs, and 64 runs batted in this season.

“Glen is a well-rounded player with a good arm and a good bat,” Dodger scout Carl Lowenstein said of the switch-hitter.

The Dodgers also drafted shortstop Chris Utley of Long Beach Poly High in the second round and Ricky Bell, a shortstop from Moeller High in Cincinnati, in the third round.

Outfielder Raul Mondesi, who sat out Tuesday’s loss because of a shoulder and finger injury, will be examined today by Dr. Norm Zimmel.

Mondesi, who sprained his left shoulder and left pinky finger with a head-first slide into third base in Monday night’s 2-0 loss to the Astros, said his finger hurts more than his shoulder.

With Brett Butler returning to center field, Todd Hollandsworth started in left and Eric Anthony, who had been platooning in left with Billy Ashley, started in right in place of Mondesi.

To make room for Butler on the roster, the Dodgers sent outfielder Eddie Williams to triple-A Albuquerque.

Raul Mondesi, who sprained his left shoulder and little finger with a head-first slide in Monday’s 2-0 loss to the Astros, is day-to-day. Martinez has lost his last four decisions. The Dodgers have won eight of Martinez’s 12 starts this season. They have scored one run in his three losses and 20 in his four victories. Barry Bonds, who said he shouldn’t be allowed to play because he’s in a slump, sat out Tuesday’s 9-1 win at Florida. Bonds has eight home runs and 26 runs batted in and is on a pace to finish with 24 home runs and 78 RBIs, which would be his worst season since 1989. The Giants are last in the NL in hits and next to last in batting average.
