Plans to reduce the proposed 25,000-unit Newhall Ranch housing development by 500 units will be one of the central issues discussed by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission at a hearing Wednesday.

At the hearing, the fifth on the project, the Planning Commission is also expected to review plans by the developer, Newhall Land & Farming Co., to dedicate a 3,900-acre area known as the High Country for public use.

The reductions would be made in a two-mile corridor between the Santa Clara River and California 126, an area where the developer planned to build 1,938 units.

At the previous Planning Commission meeting, Commissioner Cherl Vargo requested a reduction of units near the river because she wanted the view from the highway to be unobstructed and the river valley left relatively pristine.

According to Marlee Lauffer, spokeswoman for Newhall Land, the company has agreed to the request for fewer units in that area.
