Rose Lorraine Carlson, a Ventura resident whose travels took her to six continents, died Saturday. She was 72.

Carlson was born July 22, 1925, in Whittier and moved to Ventura in 1930. She worked for 20 years with the Ventura County Public Social Services Agency and retired in 1983.

She loved to travel. Carlson arrived in Antarctica in an inflatable watercraft in January 1995, made three trips to Asia and visited Australia, Europe and South America. She was planning a trip to Africa in the spring of 1998.

“She was a complex person. To the world, she was gentle and quiet and reserved,” said her daughter, Patricia Windsor of Ventura. “But to her children, she was very strong and powerful and commanding, and she had an adventurous side.”

In addition to Windsor, Carlson is survived by two daughters, Johanna Collins and Michele Willis; a son, Richard, and nine grandchildren, all of Ventura.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home, Ventura.
