Red Cross Rescues Orphans in Capital
The International Committee of the Red Cross rescued 60 orphans from a no man’s land in the heart of the Republic of Congo’s war-ravaged capital, Brazzaville. The Red Cross team picked up the children, who had been cared for by two nuns at an orphanage near the airport, which was the city’s prime target during 12 days of fighting that erupted earlier this month. Meanwhile, warring factions agreed to extend their truce for another week. But, ignoring calls for them to stay from a U.N. special envoy, 1,250 French troops completed their pullout, leaving the warring sides to their own devices.
