Chamber of Commerce President Joseph James Catallo has resigned after being arrested and charged with possession of a handgun without a permit and possession of a controlled substance, board member Ed Peura said Monday.
Catallo, 32, a painting contractor, was arrested June 10 in Torrance after an officer allegedly found Catallo carrying a plastic bag filled with rock methamphetamine and standing near a loaded .38-caliber revolver on the ground, authorities said. Catallo, who is free on bail, is scheduled to be arraigned July 15 in South Bay Municipal Court.
The Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors plans to meet today to elect new officers, including a new president.
This is the second scandal to hit the 170-member Chamber of Commerce. Frank Gale, the former executive director, was charged in January with grand theft and forgery charges.
