25 Legislators Urge UC to Recognize Union
More than 25 state legislators have signed a letter to University of California President Richard Atkinson urging immediate union recognition for UC teaching assistants and collective bargaining rights, an issue that has plagued campuses from UCLA to UC Berkeley.
The letter was announced at a Sacramento news conference Tuesday that was attended by Assembly members, graduate students and members of various unions.
Graduate student unions at six campuses, including UCLA, have asked the university to recognize their organizations. University officials have refused, arguing that the teaching positions enhance the students’ education.
