Readers Got Next on WNBA Debut

At the risk of sounding very sexist, from what I observed this past weekend from the Women’s NBA, this league will not be around long. The quality of play just isn’t there yet.

Since most women couldn’t care less about a basketball game, no matter the sex of the players, the league would have to be mainly supported by men. Given the quality of play men are used to, I don’t see them watching these games in mass numbers for very long.

Gender equity is here in sports. The greed of women professional basketball players is equal to the greed of the men.

The women’s desire for the highest salaries led some players to join one league and some players a second. Since there is not enough talent to staff two leagues, the result is bad basketball--poor shooting percentages, erratic passing, unnecessary fouls and too many turnovers.

In spite of the preseason hype, it is not enjoyable to watch.

I play in an over-40 basketball league. None of the players on our team ever played college ball. No disrespect to the WNBA, but after all the hype and then watching the Sparks play, all I can say is “We got next.”

Now I know ESPN, NBC and the teams themselves like to bend the truth, but you, a newspaper, are suppose to tell the facts. In Earl Gustkey’s story on the first WNBA game, he mentioned that there were 14,284 people there. Yeah, right. I watched parts of the game on TV--take a look at your own picture in the sports section--there were about 3,000-5,000 people, tops, at that game.

Your story made you seem like you were a paid shill whose job was to promote the league. Next time, just report the facts, because this was a case of terrible reporting and journalism.
