Public Input Sought on Police Computers

The City Council will solicit public opinion Monday on whether to spend federal grant money on new patrol car computers.

An advisory board appointed by the Simi Valley council has recommended that the city spend a $53,400 Department of Justice block grant to purchase mobile data computers for patrol cars. Patrol cars are not currently equipped with computers.

The mobile computers would allow police officers to access license, registration and warrant information from their patrol cars, city officials said.

“With the computers, officers would not have to call into headquarters and wait for information like they do now,” said Assistant City Manager Laura Herron.

She said the advisory committee also considered spending the grant money on a communication resource center, but felt the computers were a better use of the funds.

The committee was comprised of Simi Valley law enforcement officials, school and parks and recreation representatives and members of the community.
